While overcoming addiction can be one of the best things a person can do, the reality is that it can also be a difficult process at times.  One particular period that can oftentimes be very arduous is the initial detox.  During detox, a person can go through a range of difficulties, one of which is emotional side effects.

Whether it is in regard to people they have harmed through their addiction, or their behavior while under the influence, guilt can arise about many different things.  Guilt can be a very dangerous emotion, as it can tend to be a relapse trigger.  It is important to focus on the future, and what you will do moving forward, rather than ruminating on things done in the past.  Oftentimes, damaged relationships can be repaired, and you can begin to forge a positive life for yourself.
  1. Seek a Professional – There are many different addiction professionals out there that can help a person to sort through their emotional difficulties. Whether it be a therapist, counselor, or other professional, they can provide a person an outlet to discuss their emotions and work through them.
  1. Attend Addiction Treatment – Many have attempted to detox at home, and while some are successful, others can have a lot of difficulties trying to do this. Formal addiction treatment allows a person to detox and consistently have trained staff there to assist them with emotional and other difficulties.  After detox, they can go through a program that can help to fully resolve emotional side effects and difficulties.  There is also the factor that many detox centers will have medications to help wean the person down from substances, keeping withdrawal symptoms to a minimum, which makes it an easier process to go through.
